I got the Hi-Life diners club card via a Tesco vouchers offer making it a relatively cheap way of trying the card out. I don't know whether it is still available via Tesco vouchers but take note that if you do join via this method they do not send you the book listing the restaurants. This means that you are totally reliant on the website when searching for restaurants. I have to say that I have only used my card once up to now and I was surprised to find that the restaurant marks the back of your card so that you cannot use it at that venue again. I have two other major gripes about the card. Firstly, an awful lot of the venues do not allow you to use the card on a weekend and secondly the vast majority require a telephone booking. I can understand why this is required for a restaurant but with Hi-Life even the type of pub that you would never normally make a telephone booking at requires it. You really do struggle to find anywhere listed that doesn't require booking ahead although there are a small number. All in all, for the above reasons, I won't be renewing my membership when it expires. However, if you enjoy dining out during the week and like trying out lots of different places then I suppose it could be worthwhile giving it a try.
