A friend of mine, a bit of a foodie, has been pestering me for weeks to come and try the fish and chips at Harry Ramsden's. I've been somewhat snowed under with work so I've been putting it off for ages. I finally cracked on Tuesday when I needed her navigational skills to find a shop to buy my ticket for the Brighton Tattoo Convention, and in turn for her map reading I promised her chips from Ramsden's.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from the Take Away section of this big, bright and welcoming venue but it was slightly disconcerting to see a steel counter the same as any other in any other take away. So that was a bit of a letdown, maybe I was expecting more character? Still, the service was snappy and we were soon the proud owners of 2 portions of piping hot chips. Unfortunately drinks had to be purchased from the drinks machine in the doorway. A single coke cost us £1.20. Bit steep and a bit rubbish for a take away if you ask me. Surely they could have drinks behind the counter? They must have them in the main restaurant after all!

Still, the food was exactly as we expected - very tasty. I'd like to go back and try some of the fish but for a relaxed afternoon quick fix to eat on the beach, you can't really go wrong with Ramsden's. And if I was worried about it lacking character I spied on our way back to the bus stop that the little bin outside it has their logo on it. I laughed.

Harry Ramsden's is a large combined take-away and restaurant just back from the Pier, purporting to sell "the best fish & chips" in town.

In fact, Harry Ramsden's serves microwaved-from-frozen, overpriced bilge. On recommendation from my cousin (who is twelve, so maybe not a great source, but I'm trusting like that) I went there with a group of about six people for a friend's birthday. It was an incredible disappointment, between us, we ordered the full range of staples: cod, plaice, steak and kidney pie, scampi, chips, mushy peas and so on, and not one thing was beyond palettable.

The steak and kidney pie, especially, at more than £8, was a disgrace. It was soggy, pallid, cold in the centre, and tasted like a flannel marinated in oxo.

The fish and chips were all just about ok, but i think that probably everywhere else in town that i've been is better.

As I've said, I'm the trusting type, so I gave Harry a chance to redeem himself and ordered pudding, as did one of my friends, the other five of them preferring to wait until they could just get a mars bar from the newsagents. They made the right decision. The apple pie, and chocolate pudding that we ordered were as underwhelming as the mains, and both were pretty meagre portions.

Whilst the restaurant is housed in a nice enough building with panoramic views, it is next to a busy road and the decor is tired and tacky.

The service was slow, although friendly, so I've no real gripes there, but if better food comes out your toaster at home, then the place really shouldn't be called a restaurant.

If you ever feel tempted, just take a short walk west along the promenade, there are several better places, and all of them cheaper.

I can confidently say that this is the best fish and chips you can get in Brighton, I always go for cod fillet with mushy peas.

If it's a sunny day you can seat outside and enjoy a British food with a nice view of Brighton beach.

We were supposed to go to Bardsley's, but decided to stay seaside and instead went here. The spouse and couple travelling with us were in the mood for a chippy, and the world-famous Harry's fit the bill.

A reasonably sized place with average but comfortable décor. Service was friendly and swift. Not being a meat or seafood eater, I ordered a pasta dish which was decent enough but certainly not haute cuisine. My guests clucked and chowed on a rather generous portion of fish, chips, and mushy peas.

A pleasant but mundane experience for me; apparently nirvana for the others. So be it...
