This is a cracking pub. We had a wonderful meal, the portions are big and the quality excellent. They have a giant Yorkshire pudding which looked more like a loaf of bread!!! The staff were very helpful and polite and attentive. The special I had to belly pork was out of this world, I would have been happy to pay double the amount, my wife also had a special which I forget but she was also very pleased.
The ales they had though a couple all pulled just right and well kept, really enjoyed our evening there as it feels like a country pub, the new management have done wonders compared to what it was like before, the food when we visited about 3 years ago was pretty poor, least now it has improved and seems to be getting a good reputation throughout the area.
It sounds like the previous reviewer, I would not have stood for poor service and then gone on and ordered food, I very much doubt any of it happened.
Will revisit soon and look forward to seeing the place again
Hare and Hounds is a nice pub, traditional and not too pricey. It's out in Riccall which is a bit far out of York and just a small village. When I went in it was friendly enough but mainly had locals from Riccall in there, so did feel slightly out of place! I would never go there unless I happen to be in Riccall again for some reason.
I visited this pub last year whilst on a visit to see close friends and family. We all had an excellent night, live music and a great atmosphere! The staff were attentive and had no problems in table service and checking we were okay. We all had part of the steak deal which was amazing! The Jack Rabbit wine was to die for! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and i was looking forward to visiting again this year.
Having enjoyed our night so much we decided to go again but was severely disappointed. There appears to be new managers, very rude and didn't appear to care. I was waiting at the bar for over 10 minutes before i was even acknowledged by the landlady who was sat talking to people/customers. Finally after getting our drinks my husband received a very flat pint of Carling. At over 3 pounds a pint i told him to go back and get it changed. The landlady's response to this was, after a huff and a puff, 'its not my fault, its tough you already took the pint away.' under her breath. I thought that attitude was disgusting! After some negotiation we still decided to order food and sat down at our table at the bottom end of the restaurant. Yet again i was disappointed at how dirty it was with leftover food on the floor and seats, i was embarresed to have recommended this place to people.
As we were right next to the kitchen all we could hear was there radio very loud and constant swearing and shouting from the chef, who seems to be the new landlord, not what i want to hear whilst having tea! The prices have seem to increased dramatically in the past year and the standard of the food dropped!!The veg that was brought out to us was very watery like it had been sat around for ages and reheated, my husbands lasagne was cold and my sister sent her steak back to be redone as she asked for rare and received very well done!
Its safe to say i will NOT be returning to the Hare and Hounds again and defiantly NOT recommend it to people. The attitude of people was disgusting and it felt like only regulars and locals should be in there. When we left it was more like a youth club than a pub! They have definitely lost the standards the old managers had and its a shame.
