I used to live just round the corner from the Hammersmith Cafe - and I miss it. It's so good.
Mysteriously cheap. And they're incredibly friendly.
I'm only a mile or so away now, but somehow I never quite make it back here often enough. Must return.
The yellow curry, already mentioned, is good - but so is the Pad Thai. No other Pad Thai has ever matched up, for me. And, oh my god, all the vegetable dishes.
And their daytime greasy spoon fare is pretty magic, too.
Looks cheap, is cheap, tastes expensive.
I went here last Friday for a friends b'day. On passing I thought she can't be serious! this place looked like a greasy spoon but I left feeling like I found a gem. Actually a greasy spoon by day, and a short walk from ravenscourt Park station, this place transforms into an intimate and authentic Thai cafe at night. It has a bring your own booze policy which is always a fun idea, however there is a small charge for corkage.
I wasn't overly impressed with the starters but I ordered Chicken Massaman curry with sticky rice for my main and it was delicious. The sauce was thick and very creamy with the softest potatoes and most tender pieces of chicken. Another surprise was the bill which came to about £12.50 each for a table of 12 people, bargainous
I believe Paul is talking about the Yellow Curry, which is magnificent
I used to work in Hammersmith and a colleague introduced me to this place. I used to eat there two, three times a week - when it was about three quid for a decent plate of Thai food, from a choice of four or five standard dishes and one daily special. These days, I make a pilgrimage back two or three times a year. The decor hasn't changed (not a complaint!) but the menu's expanded greatly and, while prices have crept up a little, you're still looking at less than a fiver for some exemplary Thai cooking. And the Yellow Curry Noodle Soup is available all the time, not just on Thursdays.
As for the regular Yellow Curry, what can I say? I always vow I'll have something different and every time I can't resist it. Brilliant.
By day this is a greasy spoon. By night it magically transforms into a very sound thai resteraunt. The food is not over fussy nor is to chi chi. The place is clean, friendly efficient, delicious, relaxed and the food is honest and straight. It's also incredible value. My favourite is the curry with potaoes (don't remember name). make sure you bring your booze: there is no licence.
What a fantastic place. The food is cheap, delicious and never fails to please. Order the mixed starter you won't be disappointed. Its all very very good. I go back time and time again and enjoy every visit.
