    Dear Gumbo,

Why haven't I met you sooner? After two and a half years and countless days walking past this restaurant I decided to put it on my to do list.

I gave the lunch menu a try one Friday afternoon and was not disappointed. For the first course there were four options, I ordered the creole/cajun rice. The second course had four or five options I ordered the fried chicken which was accompanied with mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Everything was well prepared. And well seasoned at that! Hard to find in Madrid. To finish off the meal there were three dessert choices, I opted for the orange cake. Definitely a great surprise.

All this, plus a drink of your choice and bread, for 10,75€. Definitely will be back to try other items off the normal menu.

    A very happy lady

I wouldn't go too far out on a limb, claiming to be an expert on Louisiana cuisine. But I do know a thing or two about it, and have had some excellent examples of the "real thing."

That being said, let me say that I enjoyed the food at Gumbo.

The dirty rice, gumbo and coleslaw are very good and the fried chicken and mashed potatoes are quite outstanding. The chicken in particular is something I would go back for.

I think it's a tricky balance for a place like this: The food is kind of caught between the refinement of Creole and the gusto of Cajun. Frankly the flavor and the nature of the food is very Cajun but the presentation tends towards the Creole. You wish that the plates would just brim with food and that excessive Louisiana abandon! But I imagine that's hard to pull off at a reasonable price in Madrid.

The bottom-ine is that I would give the place five stars except that I think the prices are high and the portions are small.

I went to Gumbo a number of times whilst living close by on Calle San Vicente Ferrer. The owner/chef and his boyfriend are both nice. The food is quite good. I have normally gone for the Menú del día. The desserts were great as well. I believe I even had a mint julep there as well. I see from the photos posted that they've really changed the décor since I was there last, ca. 2009.
