A fantastic place - just like a cheese shop should be. Not only a great range of cheeses but knowledgeable staff who can guide you through the choices.
You know you are in the right place when you can be steered to the best vacherin depending on precisely when you intend to eat it.
They offer other foods as well as coffee etc to drink. But the cheese is the thing!
Absolutely one of the best shops for miles around, offering a huge range of local artisan and British regional cheeses, as well as familiar cheeses from the Continent. Family run with additional staff to serve the loyal and ever expanding clientele, this cheese shop is a joy. You could spend hours deciding which cheeses to select and are welcome to taste any before buying. The Stichelton is to die for and the Bishops Spitfire certainly adds a touch of oomph to any cheese board. Grey's also sells pickles, hams, chorizo, oils and cheese biscuits. What's more there are a couple of tables where you can sit and enjoy the freshly brewed coffee while determining your choice. Once you've visited this shop, you're certain to return.
The Emperor has no clothes We visited and ordered an overpriced cheese platter for two at £15. I asked them for an selection of stronger cheeses that perhaps had some complexity or lingering after-taste. We were served a small selection of genuinely bland tasteless chilled( not room temperature) cheeses that could have been bought from ASDA.
We were asked how good it all was. When I explained that we had sampled cheese all over and that this was a very poor show. The woman behind the counter got very loud and pompous and tried to explain how good the selection was. She then offered us a small sample of something a bit better, but admitted that it was too expensive to be part of the platter. The coffee served was a disgrace.
Sorry to say but this overpriced cheese shop doesn't know what it is doing and the people of Pangbourne and surrounding area have not really thought about whether they are being ripped-ff.
VERDICT : STAY AWAY
