Outstanding value for money, the £3.50 carvery is also one of the best carveries I've ever visited.
It's a really nicely decorated pub, totally geared up for food rather than drinking, and people travel for miles for a feed.
Unlike many pubs that sell cheap food and charge a fortune for drinks, this place is actually very reasonable for both. It's quite easy to get 2 meals and 2 drinks for under a tenner, and there are often drinks promos (soft and alcoholic).
For those who don't eat meat, they offer several veggie dishes in place of the carvery, and still allow you to fill your plate with the carvery veg/pots/yorkies. They have a simple starter and dessert menu which again is very reasonably priced.
Plenty of parking, easy access off the M180 J1 (from the west - from the east you have to go to the end M18 roundabout and turn around), fast friendly service and fabulous food. Can't ask for more really!
OK, I'll start by saying that the meal here is good value at £3.50.
But now it's downhill all the way ..
It's a buffet meal, and as it's so cheap, the place is busy, and you'd be well advised to arrive early, or you run the risk of eating stewed vegetables, and meat that has dried under the lamps.
Select two meats from four on offer; they're carved and served to your plate. Then help yourself to the vegetables and the plastic gravy.
Eat. During eating, do plenty of talking, as it will take your mind off the lack of taste in the food.
Do not order a dessert. Do not have a pint. Do not have a coffee. In comparison with the cost of the main course, they are expensive.
Instead, pop into nearby Hatfield, and get those things in The Bay Horse.
Actually, you should have eaten there, too.
I was too disappointed to notice properly, but I think this establishment is one of the Brewers Fayre chain.
Ah. Maybe it wasn't good value after all.
This carvery gets very busy at lunchtime. We queued for 30 minutes to be served and the meat looked worryingly dried out under the lamps. It didn't taste as bad as it looked and was warm although the veg and potatoes were shrivelled. The decor could do with being improved although the toilets were clean if not rather small.
I visit other crown carveries so after passing this place several times recently we popped in to try it. perhaps we picked the wrong day as there was a special family day on, with events all day, so kid's were running about inside the restaurant and sitting on tables! We opted for the carvery at £3.69. Marstons EPA was on offer so I had a pint of that at £2.00.
Whilst waiting in the queue we noticed that one of the assistants was in a bit of a mood, as every time he came out to re-fill the veg he just chucked it at the servery. Not the best of starts. I had to ask for a bit more meat as my portion seemed a little on the lighter side, yet my size 8 ladyfriend was served far more than me!
The food was cooked ok although most veg was frozen not fresh the meat (beef and turkey) was nice too. I notice they now open for breakfast which I think is £2.99 I bet that grumpy assistant is even worse in the mornings so won't be trying it out!
Worth a trip for a quick meal on the way back from somewhere would not use as a special meal.
PS the toilets were awash with water simply awful!
This pub for years has been known buy local people as very nice but expensive .It is still very nice and posh but now monday to saturday for only £3.50 you can have a carvery.you can choose from 3 meats or have a bit of all 3 of them and the meal includes all the trimmings, yorkshire puds ect.the resturant is very clean and has really nice atmosphere. The staff are also very helpful.I have recomended the carvery to quite a few friends and family members who now all return their regullaly, and also agree with me that it cannot be beaten on price service and quility.
Very popular carvery restaurant and at £3.50 per meal excellant value. In fact it's only fault is because of it's success. 5 minute wait to place order 20 minutes in a queue for carvery. I was with a veggie who had to sit on her own while I queued. So not good. But if you're a carnivore who likes a lot of good vegtables at £3.50 none better.
