situated behind the modern day railway station, this pub is sited next to what was once wolverhampton's second railway station called 'low level station'
a favourite for real ale drinkers, this authentic pub is a must for anyone visiting the town as it is a living example of black country life
living away from wolves now, every time i catch the train 'home' i always make my way down to the great western for a couple of 'points-o-moild' to wash down a 'bag-o-stratchins'
can be busy on matchdays, but don't be put off as those wolves fans in the great western are the friendly sort
A proper good pub and near the station if you use the correct exit. Or 10-15 minutes confused wandering if you start out on the wrong track.
Despite finding an alternative scenic route on the way back to the station too I very much enjoyed a visit to this excellent establishment. Millstone True Grit was a good beer and the place has a very pleasant atmosphere to it.
Used to be a great place until the present landlord too it on. He sacked all the staff, put a new menu on, loaded the prices, etc.
So whilst I still pop in - its not to eat, not for a long and not as often.
The beer (Holdens) is still excellent though.
This pub always has a nice atmosphere and the customer service is very very good. The drinks are a good price not to high and a nice place to go to meet your friends.
The atmosphere is very lively and the workers are always bubbly and willing to help and always greet you making you feel very welcome and making you want to go back again and again. There are not many places like this and is a nice little place and i recommend it alot to anyone especially for a birthday drink or a staff night out a really nice place to go.
Superb real ale pub. Friendly. Well worth seeking out. No food on Sundays though.
A gem well hidden . The beer is Holdens and three rotating guest beers well chosen but the best regular beer there is the Bathams . Unfortunately the Holdens cannot be recommended but thats not the pubs fault it just that its Holdens . Having been a regular for a long time I obviously like the place but have to say that the food is not as good as it once was and is decidely more expensive .
Absolut empfehlenswerter pub. Gutes britisches Bier (handpulled, CAMRA), Holdens und Gastbiere (wenn ich mich recht erinnere). Gutes Pubfood zur lunch-Zeit, dann aber auch sehr voll, jedoch mit sehr zügiger Logistik. Vielfach besucht, zuletzt 2008
the western is great for an easy going ale drinking night, lovely ale including a few guest ales, got an english pub feel to it but with a massive conservatory so it's spacious and has a nice area for smokers.
Tucked away behind the railway station, as you're facing the station look on the most left, go through the underground passage bit n follow path to the right, you cant miss it!!
The heartbeat of Wolverhampton.. decent beer, decent food decent staff.
nicely positioned by the station so when you've been travelling you can recharge your Wufriun spirit with a pint on your return !
Always a great welcome from Jamie and all the staff. Fantastic Holdens Special and a hot pork bap in the comfort of log fires. Regular guest ales including Quintessential by Derby Brewing Company. Like a country pub walking distance from city centre :-)
Well the chips aren't as greasy now, and you couldn't carry on selling pork cobs from a plastic box on the bar all day, not legally anyway. Food isn't as quick, but it's actually better, I think, lighter, more variety. Beer, the important bit, can never be as good as in the halcyon days, but it's still one of the best in the City. Guest beers are always Holdens thoughhardly 'guest'!
This is probably one of the best places in Wolverhampton for food! I used to work quite near to this pub and we'd often go here for lunch. Food is amazing and at very good prices, its a shame that you have to know of the place or exactly where it is to get there as its at the back of the railway. Recommendations for food are their pork or beef baguettes and fish & chips - u get huge portions! drink prices are reasonable too. Decor is quite dated, but it suits the theme of the pub and the staff/regulars are very friendly. Definately a must if you are visiting Wolverhampton.
After a few introductory errors the landlord has put his own stamp on The Great Western with some success. Has been recently voted the best pre-match pub and not just by Wolves fans. Nice pork and stuffing rolls, proper chips and Batham's Bitter. Fantastic. The other guests are no longer always Holden's either. Brough's Bitter seems popular and I have also seen Thornbridge Jaipur IPA in here. Bar service at busy times is fast and efficient. If I have a slight criticism, short measured pints are served too often. Its still a "bosting" pub though.
One of the nicest pub I have ever been too!
this pub has stood on this site for goodness knows how long as a child i used to pass it being carried on my dads shoulders.it was always a focal point for the regulars from horsley fields and heathtown a great pub where in recent years people used to meet up before heading off to see wolves play.a real old style wolverhampton pub.
