Gastronomica specialises in gourmet foods from Italy. It is a very small, busy shop on one of my favourite food shopping streets in London- Bedale Street.
There is a good range of fresh and dried egg pasta and a vast selection of buffalo milk cheeses- the Italian assistant let me try the ricotta and mozzarella which were delicious and not expensive. They have a small, but very well stocked antipasta selection with beautiful roasted aubergines, peppers, anchovies and sun dried tomatoes at 1.80 per 100g and a whole wall of Italian cured sausages (the display of meats behind the till is very impressive)
I'm not entirely sure, but I'm pretty certain that when I went last Christmas to the shop and they were doing some Italian cooking demonstrations, it was Aldo Zilli that fed me a profiterole.
I really liked this, not least the Italian assistant who made me try her sauce for the following day. Pretty saucy. They do cheese to die for. Basically, and I was told this, Gastronomica is a traditonal Italian deli of the kind you can't find a lot of now these days. So it's a pleasure they got one in London. They sell mainly cheese, meat and wine and it's all from Italy, mostly from Piedmont.
The variety is incredible! And I'm a big cheese fan. And they have little samples so you can taste what's going on. Apparently, there's queues round the block for lunchtime, when they serve Piadinas, which are Italian wraps around soft cheese and strips of ham. Sounds good, and I'm a vegetarian... (NICE).
And should you actually want a wheel of cheese, or a leg of some intricately herb-infused ham, they sell wholesale to a lot of London's big fancy Italian restaurants. And they'll sell it to the public wholesale. Yeah, all the staff appear to have a passion and big knowledge about the product they got. Which is good to see. Should you like your cheese or not, roll along to Gastronomica, just to see
If you like your cheese then Gastronomica is the place for you! I couldn't quite believe that people could be so passionate about cheeses but apparently within the deli industry, if you are going to sell the stuff you need to know everything about it. Within the little shop there is a lovely social atmosphere with cheese sampling and there is a huge range to choose from. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and are great for suggesting new cheeses based on what you usually go for. Great for stocking up just before Christmas!
