Although having lived in Cardiff for 6 years I actually only tried Frankie's for the first time about 6 months ago, after it's re-vamp and a great review from one of my friends!

And I was pleasantly surprised and very glad I had finally took the plunge to get a take away! Now I have a mixed review on this as I thought it was amazing but my hubby wasn't as taken. What I can say is that my taste is far more attune to good quality and nice authentic flavours where as he is a little more about portion size, price and likes richness (he is a big Dominoes fan!). So if I just say for him that he didn't feel that full after sharing a calzoni and wasn't that impressed with the flavours (but it didn't have pepperoni, meatballs or BBQ sauce on it which he likes). If your after a mammouth heavy dominoes style pizza, this isn't the place for you!

But enough said about his opinion, this is my review! The quality of the pizza is second to none in this area. Far nicer than the stodge fast-food ones you mainly get on city road. Frankies are all freshly made to order and stone baked with an authentic italian base. And priced at around £7 (unless you get a day time offer) they are very reasonable. And as they are all fresh to order you can easily make alterations or substitutions. Like having it turned into a calvone, which is what I always opt for.

They also have pasta, deserts and drinks so you can get a whole meal in one go!

Well worth the trip down Albany Road for.

    First to Review

Frankie's looks a little bit dingy from the outside. It looks a little bit like the kind of place that mob bosses would meet to discuss the latest innovations in cement-block-shoes over cups of tea.

Actually, if  you go inside - after checking carefully that you haven't been hooked up to a wire - you might be pleasantly surprised with the gentle pleasant service and the quite delicious food on offer.

You'll also be happy when you see the prices, which are brilliant (easy, though, to be cheap when you're subsidised by the mob). You'll want to keep going back again for that. And, I'd recommend it for breaks during exam time because it's not too busy ever so you can relax (or work) in the quiet.

P.S. For legal reasons, I should state that this cafe has no links to the mafia...

Frankie's has renovated it's shop front and it looks good to reflect the high quality of the pizza's it has to offer.

The quality is easily much better than most offerings from the Crwys road takeaways and the price for some pizzas is as low as £6.

The pizzas are inspired by tasty simple Naples styles of pizza so they are not overly full with too many ingredients, but still have a fresh delicious taste. They also do all pizzas for £5 before 6pm, which is an absolute gem of an offer.

Italian food is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it can be difficult to make an Italian meal that it absolutely mind blowing. You can make the food taste good, but you need something special to make it taste fantastic, and that something special rarely happens, unfortunately. However, on the other hand, it is incredibly difficult to mess up Italian food. Take pasta, add sauce, apply chicken, serve. Very simple.

But there is one easy way to mess up Italian food, if you don't know what you're doing, and that's to over-complicate things.

Frankie's understands this, creating their pizza and pasta dishes with a delightful simplicity that really allows each flavour to breathe and come alive in the dish. Their pizzas, in particular, are excellent. There is no bland, heavy taste of dough in your mouth when you eat these pizzas; every one is a sumptuous bouquet of flavours that are carefully selected to compliment one another. And that previous sentence should probably give you some idea of how good these pizzas really are.

Try Frankie's. They're simply the best.

It's not hard to find a takeaway on Crwys, City or even Albany Road, but none of them come even close to being as good as Frankies. Owned by an Italian from Naples you can assured that the quality and authenticity of the food is second to none.

The menu is simple yet very tasty with a wide range of pastas, pizzas and paninis.

This place is well worth a visit, if I could 7 stars I would.
