I had no idea that the festival was going on when I booked my trip to Avignon, but it was one of the highlights of my trip. There were performances on nearly every corner all day and the music was actually really good. I really enjoyed my visit.
This is the foremost arts festival in France, with - as in Edinburgh - a huge fringe, called the Off. During the festival, every July, the town swarms with performers and buskers. Every available wall, post and railing is covered in posters advertising the entertainment. The parade of performers on the first Thursday, when the Off opens, is a carnival all of itself. Performances of plays, opera, poetry, dance, comedy, jazz, etc are available all day every day, in a huge range of venues. Choose carefully, and a lack of good French need not impair your enjoyment. Book your hotel early.
