Word on the street is, you can't genuinely visit Düsseldorf without having tried Killepitsch. So on my second visit to the city, I finally succumbed to the true experience.
Myself and my two companions stepped off the cold, icy December streets and into a tiny little bar, Et Kabüffke Killepitschstube. It was crowded with old friends hanging out and drinking, adding even more to the small, enclosed feeling. I felt like I was in a Harry Potter movie, only in Germany and not England.
We ordered three tastes of Killepitsch, and I opted to sip mine instead of shooting it. It was sweet and strong, and immediately I was overcome with a warmth that permeated my body, the bite of the drink lingering even after I finished and continued out in the cold evening.
While I cannot say that I would make Killepitsch a standby, I must admit that it was certainly worthwhile, and urge anyone visiting the Altstadt and seeking an authentic experience to try it.
