It's a Düsseldorf must! Everyone visiting the city should stop there to drink a shot of killepitsch. The place is very small but full of personality and originality. It can get really full in the evenings but you can fight your way to the bar and take your shot!
Word on the street is, you can't genuinely visit Düsseldorf without having tried Killepitsch. So on my second visit to the city, I finally succumbed to the true experience.
Myself and my two companions stepped off the cold, icy December streets and into a tiny little bar, Et Kabüffke Killepitschstube. It was crowded with old friends hanging out and drinking, adding even more to the small, enclosed feeling. I felt like I was in a Harry Potter movie, only in Germany and not England.
We ordered three tastes of Killepitsch, and I opted to sip mine instead of shooting it. It was sweet and strong, and immediately I was overcome with a warmth that permeated my body, the bite of the drink lingering even after I finished and continued out in the cold evening.
While I cannot say that I would make Killepitsch a standby, I must admit that it was certainly worthwhile, and urge anyone visiting the Altstadt and seeking an authentic experience to try it.
