Proper seaside fish and chips! Nothing better.
Now I can only give this three stars although someone else would give it five.
This is purely because I am vegetarian and they cook in beef dripping.
This place is incredibly well known, not only for the sheer excellence of his fish and chips. (haddock only which is just as well given the meltdown of the cod stocks), but also the virulent green of his mushy peas. I do like mushy peas.
Cooked in beef dripping, coated in a top secret batter, the fish is straight from Grimsby up the road. Grimsby and Cleethorpes merge into each other at some point.
Homemade fish cakes are a speciality and the chips are cut in their own kitchen.
It is take away plus cafe with 38 seats. Decorated in a maritime theme it is very seaside if you know what I mean.
So if you want traditional, fresh fare this is it.
Although Ernie's is a bit of an institution in the Grimsby/Cleethorpes area, i would say it's good but not great. The takeaway part of the shop can be slow at serving at times but this is down to not making mountains of chips and doing little but often. The cafe bit is fine but a little cramped. The fish and chips are excellent and so are the fishcakes.
Best fish n chips in town. Staff always happy and smiling. Been eating there for past ten years at least twice a week. Always happy to come back. Again and again. Keep up the good work
