I love this place!!
There's half a Beetle (vehicle, not animal!) that you can sit in and eat your meal from.
The restaurant is brightly decorated and has wonderful atmosphere.
I have been here many times, with my girlfriends and my husband and I even brought 20 of our friends and family for a goodbye meal.
The staff are extremely attentive.
The food tends to be a while being cooked and brought to the table, but it is absolutely worth the wait!!
I've had a couple of meals with a starter, but I would say if you're going to have the Burrito or something similar, just go for the main meal or you'll end up in a Mexicoma.
Last bt not least: Cocktails! These are, hands down, som of the best cocktails I have ever had. The Mojito is my favourite and is made just how I like it, with brown sugar rather than sugar syrup. My friends and I have all tried different ones and have always been very impressed.
I will always be going back to this place!
I really wish I could issue a 5 star review, but alas I stripped myself of that ability and have thus had to tell myself I'm going back a few times to give it that chance.
Those who have read my review or been to Blue Hawaii will understand that I loved the restaurant that the owner of El Peyote previously ran, and as such, I came in here expecting something very similar. For this reason, I couldn't enjoy myself as much as I should have, and the fact that it's not my usual sort of food didn't help. After a couple more visits and a more packed night so I can see how the atmosphere works out, I'm hoping to be back with a fifth.
However, what I can say in favour of this place is that the staff were excellent - with the waitress being very patient with the fact that my date and I took close to an hour to actually get around to ordering our food. When it arrived, it was very nicely prepared, and extremely filling. We were attempting to leave space for ice cream at the cinema afterwards, but failed epically. The "starter in a main meal portion" option was actually more sizable than expected. And full of om nom nommies. I highly recommend the prawns, and the calamari!
And the cocktails. Due to the nature of my night here, I ended up really needing a good cocktail - and I wasn't disappointed. The bartender knew how to make his cocktails, and each one I tried turned out very well for me.
The location is the only potential downside to the success of this place - if you don't tend to walk down Richmond Road, and aren't made aware of this place, you'd never find it, which is a real shame. Why would you *NOT* want to go to a restaurant with half a Beetle (car) in it?
After reading such good reviews was sorely disappointed. If you're looking for a break from the normal chains this is worth a try, but if you want anything resembling Mexican food stay away. The owner, chef, etc seem to know nothing about Mexican food, and if the 'fusion' concept work I wouldn't mind but I had the most bland and unexciting burrito of my life here. The prices also seem very high for what it is, drinks okay. If you want Mexican, hop the train into town and any option will be better quality, sorry.
I can not believe when I saw the reviews for this restaurant. Are these people are really serious? We found this place by chance and from outside looked very inviting. We were very disappointed with the dry, tasteless food. Obviously these people never had a Mediterranean or Mexican food before. Poor quality food. And they don't even know how to make cocktails properly.
