This place has a great location on New Road probably my favourite street in Brighton to sit outside in the sunshine. I've never eaten here in the evenings, but they do a fabulous lunch deal: two tapas and a glass of wine for £5.95.
Last time I went here, I had the paella and the Spanish omelette the perfect sized portion (and price) for a light lunch. Considering that a glass of wine is between £3.50-£5 depending on where you go in the city, this is absolutely crackin' value for central Brighton.
The wine is good, the location is fabulous and the food is authentic and tasty. What more could you ask for when you're a wannabe lady wot lunches?
Ropa Vieja is my favourite accompanied with the Mexican Dream which is a cocktail. I took my girlfriend here recently for a meal and although it isn't the most expensive place to eat you don't feel like you are cheaping out.
The value for money therefore is brilliant and the food is good. If you haven't tried mexican before then this would be a good place to start as it is Mexican for the English if that makes any sense. Try a few main courses between two and share them so you can work out what you like and you don't have to worry about the misses eating hers and half of yours! (my girlfriend isn't fat, just greedy)
This is a cracking little restaurant serving authentic Mexican food.
The standard taco places don't have a patch on this, which has a much wider range on offer. The chicken mole, chicken in a savoury dark chocolate sauce, is definitely recommended.
They are located conveniently near the theatre and the Dome, so good for pre show meals.
This intimate Mexican restaurant is hidden by its neighbours Strada and the Theatre Royal, but if you look hard enough, you'll spot this Latin gem.
Open since 1999, the restaurant is owned and run by Mexican natives who have successfully transferred Mexico's national food to their delectable menu.
Dishes on offer include common Mexican dishes like enchiladas, but they also offer some less familiar items like the 'pollo al la cerveza' (a spicy chilli beer sauce with chicken and rice).
As well as the main menu, El Mexicano offers a cheaper lunchtime tapas range and an evening set menu. Having eaten here, I can honestly say that this takes Mexican food to a whole new, far tastier level.
I haven't been since I went with a group several years ago, but the service was so bad that I have no intentions of going again to find out if things have improved.
The staff got several of our orders wrong, and half the food arrived at our table lukewarm. They didn't seem to be particularly apologetic about this fact either.
All in all it was one of the (if not the) most disappointing evening that I have had with this particular group of people, with whom we have visited at least two dozen different venues in Brighton over the years. Some of the places we happily go back to, but nobody seems to have particularly good memories of El Mexicano.
The food is ok and probably would have tasted really good had it been served at the right temperature and had everyone got what they had actually ordered. Maybe I am doing them injustice as it has been several years since the experience, so hopefully they have now got their act together. I can also imagine that at lunchtime the service and quality of food is probably better, as they won't be as overcrowded as they were when we came for a visit, but unless I am in a very adventurous mood, I am not going to test them for any possible improvements.
I really enjoyed my meal at El Mexicano. They have really great deals for lunch, though I opted for shrimp tacos which were a bit more expensive. I wish the portion was a bit bigger for what a paid, but it was still immensely tasty and I came out satisfied. I was especially happy when I found out they served Dos Equis beer, which is lovely.
El Mexicano is a traditional and authentic Mexican restaurant in the heart of Brighton, and a pleasant location. It's fairly small inside but the décor is sweet with delightful Mexican style pictures on the walls and quaint chairs and tables. The service wasn't the best I've had, a little on the slow side (maybe I was just really hungry), but the staff were generally friendly and polite. There was a reasonable choice of typical Mexican dishes from mild flavours to more spicy dishes as well as different options for vegetarians.
For my main I tried the chicken enchiladas and a tapas side order called 'Ropa Vieja' which contained shredded chicken, chickpeas and potatoes in a pepper styled sauce. Both tasted quite delicious. I'm a big fan of Mexican food so it's hard to go wrong with me, however my enchiladas were slightly cheesier than I was expecting. To drink our table shared a jug of sangria which was just how you would expect sangria to taste; fruity, light and tangy - all that was missing was a sunny Mexican beach. I have to mention my dessert as it was absolutely mouth watering! Amaretto flavoured cheesecake, need I say more?! It was creamy but not too rich, the bottom was crunchy but not too soft, and they used just the right amount of amaretto so that it wasn't sickly. The portion sizes were just about right, maybe a little on the large size, but that's never a bad thing in my opinion! Price wise it wasn't cheap, but it certainly wasn't overpriced for the quality and taste of the dishes. Overall it was a very pleasant little restaurant and I'll definitely be going back here when I'm next in the mood for authentic Mexican food.
This restaurant is located near bus stops and lots of bars and pubs, making it ideal for nights out. U can choose whether to sit outside (if its sunny) or inside, either of them is well staffed with waiters. The food was lovely, especially the 'home recipes' which tasted fresh and organic. Highly recommended for Mexican food lovers.
Really enjoyed this Restaurant, great food, great service & great tequila, enough said really.
not bad at all, worth a visit, fresh produce and reasonably priced
