Originally called the Spread Eagle, this was an 18th century coaching inn on the London to Newmarket road, now known as the Eagle and owned by the Toby carvery chain, the pub serves a mean roast and to my surprise curry alongside the ample vegetables on offer. The selection of meats is good and the refresh rate is great due to the popularity of the restaurant. I have tried most of the local competition and this is one of my favourites for a good value easy feast. I must admit to being initially shocked at the addition of the curry (I presume to add to the variety) but after watching my 12 year tucking in with out hesitation I just had to have a little taste. You have not lived until you pile your plate with a fine carvery alongside a lamb bhuna and rice!!!!
My conclusion is that I am yet to find a pub chain that does a good curry, interesting that it is an option but I doubt if people will flock for the Asian cuisine. As for the roast, well keep up the good work, the vegetable selection was great and well cooked with the al dente bite I like, definitely gets a re-visit from me.
Final thought: Eagle Pond, nearby, takes its name from this pub and is located 5 min walk up Snaresbrook Road take some bread to feed the ducks you'll need the walk after your feast.
I often go to the Eagle, the food is tasty, and does a good value early bird offer. The staff are really friendly and the decor amusing.
As my husband is disabled, we find the large car park to have well marked bays close to the ramp which leads to the side door of the dining area.
An imposing building dating from the 18th century, this is a pleasant pub and carvery. We always seem to visit more in summer, to enjoy a long drink whilst sitting outside reading the papers after lunch. Unfortunately the outside space was halved when they built the adjoining accomodation lodge but it is still worth a visit. The inside area is spacious yet cosy and very comfortable so would be great in the colder weather also. The restaurant area has lots of little areas giving it a more intimate feel. Not the most up to date decoration (think your aunt's chintz) but the walls are covered in amusing photos, cartoons and artwork from classic tv and films. Something to giggle at if there is a queue for the carvery counter! Worth the wait though - tender meat, great choice of vegertables and delicious gravy. I defy anyone to leave without feeling stuffed (or is that just me being piggy?)!
well, where shall I start. I have been going to the eagle for years with them slowly getting worse. last night I went 5.45 and at the carvery there was no mash, roasters, brocchli or gravy apart from vegetarian.
complained to the waitress, who very nicely organised a plate of the missing items for me. The roast beef was so tough, I was in fear of my fillings!!!!
Never before have I had to put half chewed beef into a napkin.
went with my friend to pay and asked for the manager. She said that as I'd paid she couldn't do anything. I should have complained before. I did twice to the waitresses, but evidently that doesn't go anywhere.
I have previosly complained on their actual website about 2 months ago, but still no answer. I thought I would give them one last chance.
That was it - never again :(
