The DFDS offer very cheap 2-3 night breaks. The actual ferry crossing and accomodation can be found VERY cheap (many-a time I have seen them for £29 per person), however, be careful as you will be stung at the restaurants on board! We found this out the first time we ever went the prices are extortionate. Three or four years ago it was about £3 for a sandwich so god knows how much it is now! As the other reviewer said, it's definitely worth taking some snacks and stuff of your own if you want to make it a cheap getaway.
It is definitely best to go on one of these mini-cruises during the warm months - I have been in the summer and the sea was calm. I have also been in January and it was absolutely atrocious, fear-inducing, and reminiscent of the Titanic!!! Everyone on board was sick apart from us (good sea legs) so we were the only ones at the buffet dinner which I guess isn't always a bad thing. That day, the plates were sliding off the tables the weather was so rough. So yeah, I would seriously recommend that you go during the better weather.
These do really cheap cruises for a day trip to amsterdam - the boats are bad - the food is horrid and the cabins are small and dirty. There was no entertainment on when we went. You get to spend the day in amsterdam which is fun, better if ou dont take the optional coach tour as ou get more time to explore on your own.
You have enough time to go to a cafe, a couple of musuems and the famous red light district but its in the day so not to seedy
The duty free shop on board is okay
Okay if you want a really cheap trip away as they sometimes have offers on.
Cheap cruises so don't expect 5 star luxury, basic cabins quite small, sometimes they have entertainment sometimes not, Duty free shop is ok, if you want a cheap mini break give them a try.
I have used the ferry to Amsterdam from North Shield on 3/4 occasions and, for the money, you really can't fault the service. Whilst the standard cabins are small, they are clean and ensuite, size doesn't really matter when it's just overnight each way. I am aware you can upgrade but I have never done it but I imagine you would get more space.
Watch out for the expensive restaurants - either take a picnic or plenty of euros and bar prices are not cheap either - captive audience prices infact! There is entertainment on the boat, the usual singing and dancing but makes for a good evening. When you disembark there are plenty of buses waiting to take you into the centre - very well organised. In my opinion a good credit crunch break away!
