We were in membership here for a year-but won't again. We found that once the membership was established nobody could give a toss-despite our regular attendance and efforts to get involved! We found it pretty unfriendly unless you're part of the Range Rover/private School set and staff are a bit complacent. The redeeming features are the lovely pools and pretty good food bar.( For AFTER the gym session!) And it's not cheap!
There is no doubt that this is a nice establishment, both an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, sun loungers, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, gym, badminton courts, squash courts, tennis courts It sounds brilliant, but the reality is not so good.
Firstly, it is a very expensive place to join, and quite simply it is no longer worth the money. I used to be a member, but left due to facilities not being maintained. for long stretches the outdoor pool was unavailable, likewise with the jacuzzi and when speaking to staff it seemed like it was not particularly to get it sorted as quick as possible. Also air conditioning was a problem for the whole time i was there, with it not working in the gym for some time and never working well in the badminton courts, why this hasn't been sorted is beyond me?
Recently went back after being offered a free weekend to try it out again, and i wasn't impressed. This was a time where they could have won back my support, but instead i found that the staff could barely be bothered to talk to me about their offers and still many facilities were unstable.
The only redeeming feature is the bar, which is really nicely lighted and offers excellent food, however, even this is overpriced.
The devonshire is considered high in respect, it is where the weathly people of plymouth tend to go to the gym. It hosts not only an indoor pool but an outside one as well and think this sets it apart from others. The outside pool keeps breaking which is particularly annoying. I have been here a few times on guest passes, i think £63 a month is rather steep to pay and certainly wouldnt pay this - i think you do get quite agood service and the staff are friendly, that's if you can afford it! generally i would opt for a cheaper gym, most people would be able to cope without this place.
When the club first opened it was worth paying the steep membership fees. It really was a 'luxury' experiencebut now, several years later it's fairly standard, and dated too. When you have to pay a large joining fee and hefty monthly fees on top you expect the club to be maintained to a high standard. From the chintzy decor to the old TVs in the gym (surely at £63 a month they can stretch to plasmas?!): The Devonshire is a club in dire need of a facelift.
I'll be giving it a try once more soon.
A serious injury stopped me going for 9 months.
I will use my membership (which is frozen right now) and see out my agreement here then use Mar Jons and the new Life Centre when it is built.
I really hope to enjoy the rest of my membership.
