5 reviews for Coach House
All Reviews
Coach House is in one of Brighton's nicest and most vibrant streets, featuring other pubs like The Hop Poles and a number of well known and good quality restaurants.
Coach House is not out of place amongst such good competition, they offer an enjoyable environment that is both relaxed and atmospheric. The outside area of Coach House is one of the nicest in Brighton; it is well decorated, intimate (without being small) and relaxed.
Prices are steep, but that is standard for the South Laines area. I paid about £3.60 for a pint, and £3.90 for a glass of wine. I'd recommend this for a Friday night drink, especially in summer.
The Coach House is really lovely because, though not a pub, it manages to have an informal and friendly atmosphere, that some similar restaurants lack. You can pop in for just drinks- there is no obligation to eat. In fact the Coach House is a really nice place to share a bottle of wine after a hard day's shopping, as they have a beautiful leafy little courtyard, which becomes quite a suntrap in the summer. It's proximity to the seafront also makes it an ideal place to stop off on your way back from the beach.
And if you are hungry, the food is delicious. I have quite often popped in to the Coach House for 'just one drink' and ended up having dinner, simply because other people's food looked so good. And once I've had a glass of wine, all plans for eating at home go out the window! If you like seafood, I highly recommend the lobster ravioli, its really unusual. The Moules Mariniere are also really good.
If you do fancy a more formal meal the menu will certainly impress and there is plenty of indoor seating. You can even book your table on-line!
A pub cum restaurant which has veered more towards 'restaurant' in recent years.
Entrance is through a pretty court yard with a few small tables and pot plants, which almost looks like someone's back garden (and indeed is for the residents of the coach house studios above!). Inside, a roaring fire keeps customers warm, sometimes too warm, in winter.
The menu focusses on well cooked, fresh modern British food, with a range of starters and deserts as well as the main dishes. It is not the cheapest place in town - mains can be up to around £15, but it's perfectly fine to come just for drinks, making this a great place to linger with friends for an afternoon after your meal.
Unlike a lot of restaurants in Brighton, the Coach house stays open from lunchtime right through until close so if your in the Laines and finding everywhere has closed for an afternoon break then the Coach House will always be open.
The menu offers modern European food and a main will set you back about, £13, they are famous for their fresh fish dishes so check the boards. They have a quaint little court yard area with palm trees and lanterns which a nice change from the on street seating found at other restaurants in that area. Its a cute place for a first date but I wouldn't go there in a large group.
This charming place is one of the first places I think of when asked to meet in South lanes. It's spacious outdoor area and tastefully designed interior make it a very pleasant place to wile away the hours. A normal tea costs £1.50 and oh how it's refreshing. However, if you fancy something alcoholic you should head down between five and seven on Sunday to Friday, as you can get some pretty good deals, including two glasses of white wine for £3.95 or two bottles of Grolsch for £3.50. Having never eaten there I can't comment on the food, however, the decent prices and slightly middle-eastern décor set it apart from most traditional boozers. As it's busy on weekends I'd make a booking but usually that won't be necessary. If you're in the area I'd seriously recommend checking it out.
