We reinforce the praise in the other reviews, but also state in 2010 that this store is thriving.
We now have a better, more accessible retailer in York than travelling to Manchester megamarket or to the Leeds branch.
York's store is relaxed and of a good size with its wide range of Chinese and Far Eastern goods. We were not daunted as we were in the Chinese megastores by the massive display cabinets and aisles of utensils for buying in bulk to supply city restaurants.
Chi Yip is of a more domestic nature and we enjoyed the experience of shopping here.
Thank you to Vivien Li for her friendly advice, too.
It's opposite the excellent Turkish restaurant, Kapodokya.
At long last York has it's very own Chinese supermarket!
Before chi yip opened, I had to trek all the way to Leeds city centre to stock up on all my essential Chinese cookery ingredients!
There is a wide range of exotic looking fruit and veg at chi yip, some you won't recognise, some you will! you can also pick up lovely stir fry essentials such as delicious pak choi.
The freezer cabinets have a wide range of precooked dim sums that you can take home and cook yourself (usually steam or deep fry) As well as frozen meat and fish.
You can also buy sacks of rice, it's much cheaper to buy like this if you have room to store it!!
There is a good selection of canned and jarred goods, some really interesting items, quite a number of them I've never heard of, but many that I have and would love to have a go cooking with!
I would say if your new to Chinese cookery, but want to be experimental than have a recipe in mind and take the list of ingredients with you, otherwise you might get a bit over whelmed at how much 'stuff' there actually is!
Last but not least is the fish and meat counter, where there is a member of staff on hand to serve you - there is also tanks of live crabs and lobster so you can literally choose which poor creature you want to take home and cook
does a very good range of pre packed dim sum, noodle soups and other chinese ingredients, that you would expect to find in the chinese supermarkets in manchester china town.
as you walk in or by, don't be put of by the smell of something decaying or has crawled under the floor and died. as when i went, i noticed it, only slightly, but it brought back memories!
durian fruit! these normally basket ball sized fruits (though the one in this super market were smaller! and alot less ripe then the ones i've seen before!) in there spikey drab green shells, stink!
i don't mean, just a bad smell, i mean, stink as in pig silage! and inside is a yellow coloured fleshy seed, size of a golf ball, that according to my family taste really sweet!
erm not for me i've never tried it! i can't over come the smell for one thing!
they have a butcher section, with butcher at hand, so you can get the cuts of meat you want and how you want it! and a live lobster and crab tank!
chopsticks and bowls etc but no nodding budda? i always wanted one of them in the car, to bless me as i drove!
staff are really helpful and chatty
A great store with lots of selection and conveniently placed! Decent hours too! Friendly staff and good prices.
