Do you get really peed off when buttons fall off or hems fall down? Are you vertically challenged and your trousers are always yards too long for you? I suffer from this problems often, and as I'm not about to learn how to sew, I was in desperate need of a good tailors/alterations business.
This odd little place was advertised in the local paper, so I went to investigate, with an especially annoying pair of new trousers. Step inside and it looks like another cheapy clothes store, the new clothes they sell are nothing but market-stall fodder and not really worth a second glance.
They charged £10 to take up my trews, and did it within 3 days. I had to be measured and was man-handled by a woman (it was fine, I'm just not used to going to a tailors!) I have to admit, despite the rather depressing shop and unspectacular surrounds and service, I have been pleased with the result. The hems are even and the length just right, and looks like they'll stay put. They also do repairs of almost all items of clothing. Might be worth going somewhere a bit pricier/ more upmarket if you want your Gucci suit/ballgown/wedding dress altered though.
