We'd looked at the Buffalo Grill a number of times as we'd passed through Stockbridge, and we finally decided to take the plunge. We enjoy the steaks at Kyloe, but it's a little pricey and, to be honest, I don't feel it has a great atmosphere. Not bad, but just not intimate. The Buffalo Grill is a much more rustic environment, with a good amount of space between tables, though I wouldn't like to have had the small table by the door. We both chose to have the T-bone medium rare, with a side of seasonal vegetables. The steaks were big, juicy and had great flavour, occupying the whole plate, with the chips and veg on side plates. The chips didn't seem home-made, but were hot and tasty. Definitely worth the money. We finished with the desert specials: a crumble and a sticky toffee pudding, both with ice cream, and both excellent. Wine prices were generally very good, and the Cabernet/Shiraz we had was great value and delicious.

Service was excellent. Very friendly and welcoming, and the waitresses were attentive without being imposing. Recommended, and we'll definitely be back.

Really wasn't impressed. Went in for lunch as were in the area and my boyfriend had eaten there a bit when he lived in Stockbridge a few years ago. It has a weird smell when you go in, is it the carpet? Smell disappears after a while. It looks very dated and reminded me of Stakis Steakhouses my family would go to in the 80s. We both had burgers and chips. I had fancied steak but their lunch steak options were poor. Burger was dry, chips not that great. If a grill place can't give you a juicy burger then why go back at night for their steaks?

Two stars because it wasn't awful, just not that good and also, a family with small children came in and were turned away as the restaurant don't allow under 5s. I like that rule.

Buffalo Grill, like its sister restaurant in Newington, is the place to go if you want a good steak! This isn't just your normal bland Steak House, this is a steak house with character!

The menu provides a range of steaks, however I have to insist you to try the Roquefort Rib-Eye steak. It's delicious! However, you are someone who goes to a steak house for something which isn't, well, a steak, then you will not be disappointed! On offer are chicken, fish and even some vegetarian options! Yes, this steak house does indeed provide for vegetarians!

Furthermore, what adds to Buffalo Grill is that it has its own independent feel about it, something which you do not get with large high street chain steak houses. Also, you can bring along your favourite bottle to the restaurant, for a small fee for corkage.

This is one of my favourite restaurants to Edinburgh, prices are not cheap, but well worth it when you tuck into that Roquefort Rib-Eye steak, well done of course, with its blue cheese, garlic, red wine sauce...enough, I think you get the picture, Buffalo Grill is the best place in Edinburgh for a steak!

Not as good as I remember it to be.

Maybe they were understaffed, or maybe they staff are not as good as they should be... whatever it is, this restaurant can do better.

The food was nice, nothing more, nothing less. Portion sizes are good and my steak was medium-rare as I requested, but there was a certain something missing... the flavours do not grab you. At no point did I feel that I must return here, yet at the same time it was good enough to satisfy my hunger.

Maybe my taste buds have matured, or maybe I expect too much, but I left Buffalo Grill having eaten as much as I wanted / needed, yet also feeling that it wasn't as special as it could, and possibly should, have been!

After a wander down Stockbridge and looking for a place for a decent plate of food, I ended up in the Buffalo Grill for the first time. Initial impressions were reasonably good, as the restaurant had a varied tex-mex menu and the decor was rustic but cosy. There were lots of cool photos and paintings on the wall showing the native Americans from yesteryear, which had me fixated.

I wanted vegetarian or seafood and found that the menu had six or seven options, which is pretty decent for a place that prides itself on its knowledge of beef. I ended up ordering a wrap stuffed with beans, rice, bell peppers and chilis, topped with guacamole, sour cream and cheese.

Upon dinner's arrival I was a little worried that the meal wouldn't fill me up - the plate sizes looked a wee bit on the small side for the price. However, I was quickly proven wrong upon digging into the grub. The food was hot, tasty and a good portion size after all.

My dinner companion had the blue mountain burger, and for a meaty meal he was happy with the result. We also scoffed down onion rings, leaving us too full for a pudding (but the toffee dime bar cake sounds AMAZING...).

Service was friendly and prompt. Everything was delivered in good time and nothing was late or incorrect. Nice.

We weren't looking for anywhere particularly fancy, so if you want a relaxed atmosphere and some good, home-cooked grub then this is a good bet. The restaurant was busy so I think it's a popular haunt around the area. Give it a go!

Buffalo Grill is ranch style food in a non fast food setting, making it a pretty darn fine place to chow down (did that sound remotely American? Or have I just embarrassed myself?). If you're a faithful vegetarian and like a lot of menu variety, this venue is probably not ideal, although they do have a few veggie things on the menu, like a Mexican tortilla, or the good old veggie burger. If you're a lover of big, high quality cuts of meat, then this is certainly one of the best restaurants to go to in Edinburgh for such a speciality.

There is another Buffalo Grill up near Bristo Square, which is BYOB, however the Stockbridge BG is licensed, which is a bonus if you forget to buy vino on the way there. You can still bring your own bottle if you want, with a charge of £1 for corkage. The atmosphere at the weekends is bustling and really good fun, and the hefty steaks served here are sure to line your stomach before a night out. There are tons of tasty Scottish beef varieties on the menu, but I tend to stick to the awesome French rib-eye, in a mushroom, brandy and mustard sauce. There are also burger, chicken, and fish options. Lastly...how good does this sound? "The Carpetbag - Centre-cut rump steak with half a dozen Scottish oysters pan-fried in garlic butter." Give this steak a try if you come here for a meal, it's definitely next on my list.

Great steak, shame about the sauce.

I've been here twice, a couple of years apart. First time I had a burger and remember it being everything a good burger should be. Good enough in fact to return with enthusiasm. This time I ordered steak with a fancy-pants chili sauce. Seemed like the thing to do. 'Twas not dear reader, 'twas not. After a couple of mouthfuls of red gloop I scraped the rest to one side and concentrated on the fine steak buried beneath.

A salutory lesson. They do certain things really well; starters, grilled meat and puddings. The trimmings; sauces, gussied-up dishes, decor, not so good. If both parties stick to what they do best a fine meal can be enjoyed by all. Especially if you take advantage of the BYOB option and spend a tenner on a decent cab sav to go with the food.

This is a tiny little restaurant that tends to get absolutely packed out and can become rather noisey.

The chicken main courses can be rather dry but the starters and desserts are good.

A popular venue but in all honesty a pretty average dining experience of late.

Over a period of more than 5 years, I have given this place chance after chance, in an attempt to find a return to previous form (the highs of 4 and more years ago). Unfortunately, it's been mostly no more than average over that latter period.

Even recently there have been some delights (in both the often friendly, cheerful staff and the dishes which can be cooked and presented well) but there have also been some pretty dismal efforts too. Unbelievably for this type of restaurant, the quality of steaks can be very disappointing. Sometimes gristly, sometimes too thin, sometimes over/under cooked but overall not nearly consistent enough.

Starters tend to be reliable and tasty.

Seating can make a big difference to your dining experience. Avoid tables anywhere near the door. In an effort to cram in as many customers as possible, there are usually tables directly in front of the doors and immediately to either side. As the interior is so crammed, those waiting to be seated often spill out into the street through open doors, leaving those dining nearby to suffer the usual cold draughts of an Edinburgh evening.

Popularity can make bookings difficult but if you find this is the case, don't; simply book a table at any number of other worthy restaurants in the city. If you want to stay fairly local and don't mind a change in cuisine, there is a Pizza Express a couple of hundred meters towards town. There is a fabulous Indian restaurant (Far Pavilions) about half a mile towards the Forth Bridge. Great, modern Italian food can be found at Zanzero (400m towards town.)

Finally, if you don't go expecting much and are simply eating en-route to your night out, you might strike lucky and have a nice time. If you're planning on making your food the focus of your evening, do yourself a favour and find somewhere better. There are plenty.

I love this place. I have been a few times over the years and it is far better than it's sister near the University.
It does really amazing burgers and there is a dish called chicken redpeppajam which has a sticky and hot sauce that is just lovely. It also comes with amazing corn fritters which are worth the cost of the dish alone.
It is a small venue and you are probably best to book ahead. I would also suggest that it isn't really good for big parties, I would say a party of six is the most it could handle.
Nice staff, good puddings and as it is bring your own bottle you don't feel the pressure to order that expensive house red if you really don't want to.

went here with my work and really enjoyed my meal! I had garlic bread for starters with a chilli burger for my main, I couldn't fit in a dessert! The burger was really good, the best burger I've ever had. Everyone I was with really enjoyed their dinner, some had steak with garlic mushrooms for starter (I don't like mushrooms, but this was even tempting to me!). Good selection of wines too. Very friendly staff who were easy to chat away to.
The only problem I had here was that it was too filling for me. But that's what you expect from a grill I suppose.

I have been to this restaurant once with my boyfriend and we both loved the place. It is an american place with mainly steaks and burgers. We both had steak and it was gorgeous. It was very filling also and the prices are very reasonable.
You are best booking before you go as it is a very popular restaurant.
It is BYOB also, even though the place is licenced which is great as that helps reduce the cost of your meal straight away. You do not feel like you are getting rushed in the place either. Highly recommended.

The beauty of Buffalo Grill is that you can go and know exactly what you're going to have - comfort food (in a way) and at a cheap and cheerful rate. However, in these recession hit times, eating out is more of a luxury than it used to be and lots of cafés and restaurants have thrived by ensuring that they provide an experience worth paying for, using locally sourced ingredients, cooking to a high standard on the premises rather than using pre-made food and taking pride in their menu and what they offer. Unfortunately, Buffalo Grill has not done this. I used to love BG; the El Diablo burger was a particular favourite. However, on our last visit the scales fell from my eyes as I waded through my 'salad' (NB it's not the '80s anymore, who serves a slab of iceberg these days?) and chewed through stodgy, packet sourced, frozen-until-half-an-hour-ago chips which incidentally had been advertised on the menu as 'fries' (not the same thing). Making chips is not difficult and even the local pub would balk at serving up anything less than hand-cut triple-fried little beauties nowadays. For dessert, I had dime-bar cake and when it arrived I realised that it was just out of a packet (don't they sell that at IKEA?) and certainly not worth the £4 per portion being charged.

The restaurant was shabby with paint peeling off the walls, the tables were in an appalling condition and our wine was corked. Oh and if your waitress tells you that it is illegal to serve mince (burgers) at anything less than medium cooked in Scotland, she's delusional. This is totally untrue and if so I've been to several other restaurants (one with a Michelin start chef) who are flagrantly breaking the law. Maybe that's Buffalo Grill's policy and if so that's fine but at least be honest about it. My advice? Don't bother unless you want a below average meal that leaves you feeling just a little bit 'meh'.

this place was pretty good, food was delicious, cheap corkage, reaosnable service. My only complaint was that I was a little miffed when I asked for mayonaise for my chips and was brought sour cream- I know it's white, but they're really not the same thing. Very cheap dinner out, and great chicken wings and steak. Defintiely worth a visit, but don't go with expectations of fine dining.

From the ashes of the much loved Bert's Bar comes the Stockbridge Tap - from the outside this looks like a fancy upmarket bar like Hectors but head inside and you will see that nothing has changed but the menu which is now all locally sourced and delicious!
A great pub for chilling on a sunday afternoon with the papers.

Definitely one of the best restaurants in edinburgh. American styled with massive steaks and chicken and burgers etc, but the quality is definitely there! Not like a fast food place, more of fine dining. Also it is bring your own bottle so drinks work out very cheap. However the food is a little bit more expensive. Definitely recommend

One of my favourite restaurants of all time! This is a lovely restaurant which I have had the pleasure to enjoy several times. I miss this restaurant now I don't live in Edinburgh and rate it as one of my favourite places to eat. There is a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. It is preferable to book a table as they can be busy which is understandable! The food is lovely. My favourite were the carpet bag steaks, a lovely steak with oysters and garlic. The chips are great here. It is a lovely relaxing restaurant offering a great dining experience. It is located in Stockbridge a nice area of Edinburgh. The staff are friendly and helpful.

This busy Stockbridge haunt hates to turn away a good customer. We appeared salivating at their doors and they immediately booked us in for 30 minutes time, asking if we didn't mind having a drink next door first. By the smell wafting from the kitchens as various things sizzled in our direction it was tempting not to say 'I'm happy here thanks'. We all ordered steaks which came with a variety of delicious sauces (try the red wine and blue cheese) with onion rings and chips as sides. The waiter made us feel very welcome and checked all was OK and managed to convince us we really did have room for dessert. A very enjoyable dining experience and well worth a visit when in Stockbridge.

Oh yes, Buffalo Grill in Stockbridge is a great (and popular) place to go if you like your steaks cooked just as you ask for. I like a nice, rare steak and I often find, in other steak-houses, if you ask for a rare steak you get it medium-rare; not here, however. Great stuff, try and get a window seat on a sunny day and enjoy Stockbridge with some nicely cooked, tasty Scottish beef.

Its ok for the first few visits but does become somewhat dull after that. I know that the name should say it all but a little imagination can go along way.

Haven't really noticed much of a change since the change of ownership. I was really diappointed when I heard it was changing hands, but I'm happy to say none of the changes have been to drastic. Its got a good selection of real ales which is a must for any pub that I visit, also once inside its got a good traditional pub feel about it.

It does what is says on the tin  the clue is in the name. If you want a good steak, you could do a lot worse than eat here. My partner and I have been eating here for five years or so, off and on and have never had a bad steak. The staff are always friendly and attentive and the starters are tasty. The menu is not wide and varied but neither is the menu in any other steak restaurant. You can take your own wine and the corkage is very cheap, the house wines are also very reasonable. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and you don't have to dress up to eat here.
