When I lived in London (2007 - 2008), this was my most beloved place to eat. I still dream about it...
The atmosphere is relaxed and the service was always top notch.
They have, or had, a Prix Fix menu during both lunch and dinner. It allowed you to choose any 3 of the following: appetizer, salad, entree, dessert. The meal included a beverage. It was priced at around 12 pounds if I remember correctly. I selected this meal option every time. The menu rotated often enough to provide interesting choices, and EVERYTHING I ever ate there was delightful!
This is an ideal place to bring one or two mates for a meal, but not more than that, as the restaurant is modest in size and can be a bit crowded.
BASE attends to all of the little details that convey the feeling of a more sophisticated dining experience: fabric napkins, tasteful flatware, nicely uniformed servers, gourmet presentation/plating of the food, and they never rush you through your meal.
Additionally, they keep later hours than most, so I was always able to come and enjoy dinner after closing my coffee shop in the evening.
The one place I think about every time I recall food in the UK is BASE. I recommend it to everyone who is headed that way.
Of all the dishes I ate there, the thing I savored the most was the marinated olives and bread that came to the table when I was seated. DELICIOUS!!!
Oh my dear BASE, how I miss your culinary delights.
That was the word I left with after we stumbled in here off the tube, starving and in need of some foodage. We tried to find seats at a few surrounding pubs, but with most not serving food anymore and the others packed to the walls, we decided to give this place a shot.
Upon entering there was a table of 3 finishing up and a lively table of 4 enjoying wine. This looked like a somewhat good sign. We immediately ordered wine, because, well, we like to drink and then studied the menu to see what tasty bits we could partake in. My friend ordered the prefix menu and I ordered the very yummy lamb special and I do have to say, it was absolutely delicious!
The only complaints I had with the place was the heat. It was quite chilly outside and it's nice to walk into a warm place, but when you start sweating about 10 minutes in, that is a bit warm. Other than that, the service was lovely and the meal was satisfying which is more than I can say for the members club we went to after.
My lips are pouted in contemplation,
My eyebrows are scrunched in deliberation,
I'm nodding slowly in rumination...
No, this is not my super-secret script of the musical I'm writing (pshaw, like I'd show you that...) This is the best way I can describe my experience at Base.
When you're not expecting much, it's not tough to be pleasantly surprised. But to have a 4-star experience from a little drop in, nothing fancy, run of the mill Mediterranean establishment that looks like it was decorated via generic "restaurant" catalog, now that was a surprise. And it was guuuuud.
In fact, although I've never thought to go back, I would definitely recommend Base for a tasty and affordable meal along Baker Street.
I had seen several recommendations for this place as an affordable, enjoyable brasserie. So a group of friends and I went their for a birthday dinner and we had a wonderful evening. The food was good, reasonably priced and the waitstaff was patient for dealing with a group of loud, giggly girls.
The atmosphere is casual. And maybe a bit too casual. We had to ask the waitress if she could do anything about the gentlemen who would not leave our table no matter how much we asked them (Alas, she could not). But we did get a bottle of champers out of the deal!
If you're on a budget (and who isn't with all that Christmas shopping and the credit crunch?) and fancy going to restaurant good quality food, Base Bistro Bar is a perfect. It's not really cheap but for the quality of food I would expect to pay a lot more. The food is delicious, I often order the lamb shank and have never been disappointed. There is so much on the menu that it will probably take you a while to order. The staff are all friendly and I've never felt pressurised into ordering quickly- the relaxed atmosphere is another bonus. It is just minutes from Baker Street tube station and is great for lunch or dinner. I cannot fault this place you have to try it!
Absolutely the loved the goat cheese and grilled vegetables ciabatta.. warm n crispy.. just how i like it... and the price is great :-) location is even better.. great place to go in a hurry as well..
they do take-away as well..
A tiny french style restaurant. Base has a really interesting and varied menu. Dishes cost around £10. It has a very relaxed intimate atmosphere, feels like a place to hide from the bustle of baker street. What really sets this restaurant apart is its desserts which are incredible. Worth going to just to try the chocolate cake.
I really like the food here alway tasty and fresh and good for me cause i'm a local. Best quality breakfast i have found in the baker street area.
Excellent food and service....
I just love to go there every now and then for a fantastic breakfest.
Staff is very friendly and price is good too...
the best caffee and breakfest of london.
