Personally I love the carvery here; perhaps I'm a vegetable fiend? My girlfriend and family are not as keen but it is good value and the vegetable are unlimited! It can be difficult to find a seat at busy times although staff are often on hand to help and the price is doubled on a Sunday.
If i were rating purely as a bar I would give 3/5 due to the staff being somewhat impatient at night, who seem keen to finish as soon as possible. There is little atmosphere compared to other pubs in Seaton Sluice but they do have a relatively cheap selection of lagers and soft drinks, the fairly recent introduction of ales was personally well received by myself.
Yes, so it is now a chain. So what. The pub meals at the Carvery were good value and the pints were VERY well priced. Extremely helpful and courteous staff and dear god in heaven they had clean toilets. Having been a barman in London I can tell you clean loos are not high on the priority list.
The Astley Arms has a nice bit of history, being a popular pub with submarine crews during the Second World War. Make sure you read the stuff about the HMS Seahorse's crew who never returned for the whiskey they won in a raffle on Christmas Eve in 1939.
This pub used to be much better than it is now. I used to take my family here. The food was tasty and plentiful, the staff quick and pleasant. However, we had an unpleasant experience finding something other than food (broken plate) in our dinner. The staff replaced the meal but offered no more than a bland apology and free drink. We haven't been back since, however, when it was on form it was really worth going as the interior is very comfortable and the location, just on the sea front, is excellent if going with kids - there is a little park opposite too.
May be good value for early Teatime on a school night,. But Sunday late lunch was not the most pleasent dining experiance, only two meats not the 4 advertised, veg tired looking, view through severy door into kitchen worrying, veg scattered on floor, fly hovering patiently over both meats!
Gravey serving area sticky and unpleasent, Gravey with mustard grains no
normal gravey, ok for adults, not nice for a young child.
Decor tired loking, tables only cleared when we requested cutlery! Diet coke was flat all in all not the happiest of sunday treats!
Staff pleasent enough just sadly in short supply.
This was our 2nd attempt at the ASTLEY, having read earlier reviews that it had improved, sadly this was not the case today! August 21st
A family friendly pub that has a warm atmosphere and reasonably fast service. If you're enjoying a sunny day at the beach when it suddenly starts to rain then you can quickly take shelter and grab refreshments here. Last time I did this, two desserts were ordered. One being the strawberry cheesecake, the other was warm chocolate fudge cake. Two small bottles of red wine (18.75ml) were ordered aswell. I remember particularly enjoying the strawberry cheesecake but felt liking screaming at the kids who I felt were screaming at me. This obviously was not the case, I just don't like screaming kids. I suppose if you enter a family friendly place you have to expect families who aren't necessary friendly. My last visit here was like a scene from Withnail & I.
went there for a sunday dinner ,you would expect that they would be using fresh veg but no it was all frozen stuff.roast potatoes were soggy (and they were the fresh ones)
meat was nice though, staff were freindly but if they keep using frozen vegetables i wouldnt reccomend going back to anyone
Although it can be hit and miss getting a table at peak times the food is good and represents excellent value for money. The location is good as well, being close to teh sea and a playground there is always somewhere to take the kids if they are getting bored.
