Asia Style

I have meant to visit Asia Style for literally years and finally made it tonight. I had very high hopes which ultimately have been let down for a combination of different reasons.

Service was just awful. We had possibly the scariest waitress I have ever come across in a Glasgow restaurant. Food chucked at you and questions shouted at you. (There were plenty of other staff around the place that seemed pleasant, but it seems it was not our lucky night)
Plus they don't take credit/debit card after all these years. Seems crazy.

Most important bit now though - the food.

We shared soft shell crab (salt and chilli) for starter. The crab was nice, but the portion size was an absolute disgrace for the price.
Tiny is a fitting description.

My wife had crispy shredded beef which i tried. It was horrible. I'm not sure there was any beef in at all. It was just chunks of hard burnt batter.

Now the one thing that saved the visit for me. My main was a chicken Malaysian curry. It was amazing and the portion size was huge. It can't take away from everything else, but I can't deny it tasted great.

I have not written this place off completely due to that main course, I think I will go back at some point and hopefully have a better overall experience, but for the moment it has to be a low score of 2 stars.

When it comes to ethnic cuisine in Scotland, humble family-owned establishments are the way to go versus any faceless chains or corporate behemoths. Tip: follow the international students, or a dining room filled with [insert demographic responsible for cuisine - not so easy in Scotland].

An unassuming local institution hidden away in Charing Cross that needs no website, PR or marketing. With Malay-Chinese flavours, evening queues can be expected, and boy is it worth the wait. Sip on cups of complimentary green tea that primes you for the impending feast to come. This is a family style affair as portions are generous, so if you're selfish leave now or risk looking like a pig. Dishes arrive as soon as they're ready, and service is quick and efficient. Dine on ultra-savoury Malaysian pancakes which you generously coat with a luscious curry sauce with a kick. Crispy chilli and salt squid and soft shell crab are not to miss, nor are the noodles or the duck.

Those choosing to celebrate private affairs or for larger bookings, there is a private dining room downstairs that accommodates up to 18 people, and it's BYOW (bring your own wine) with a £3 per glass corkage. However, there is a bar as well. Word to the wise: cash only, so come prepared.

Went here for a meal on hogmanay with my friends. I was really looking forward to it because I'd seen the rave reviews on here and looked up the menu before I went. The decor isn't great and the lighting is just a bit to sterile and bright. There is no music either, which slightly puts me off a bit, but there were fourteen of us, so it was fine.

I had salt and chilli chicken with fried rice which, there was millions of. It would easily feed around four people which I think eventually it did! My salt and chilli chicken wasn't overly spicy like quite a lot of places. I had some soft noodles from someone and I really enjoyed them, and when I go again I'll definitely have them!

All in all, a decent place for Chinese/Malaysian cuisine and could definitely see myself going back during the year.

Awful!!!! Awful!!! Awful!!!

After years of hearing excellent reviews of this place it really saddens me that I give this place 1 star But here is why. Firstly They say service with a smile? No way! This waitress only insisting on shouting across the restaurant at us! After spending a good 15 mins on trying to choose what to have we finally decide. For starters my husband and I shared the salt and Chilli soft shell crab, this was nice. Main meal my husband had the Malaysian style curry, now this is the only reason this place got any stars, I had the crispy beef (really bad choice on my behalf) this is not something I would normally order but I guess I just panicked! When the food came out it wasn't place on the table in an orderly fashion It was basically flung at you!

The crispy beef was awful!! Very very poor, it was soo over cooked and hard that I cracked a tooth trying to eat it! This is not good! In fact if it wasn't for my husbands dish being massive and really nice I would have gone hungry!

Now despite the massive sign on the door WE DO NOT TAKE CARD, they do not take card!!! Now its 2013 this restaurant has been there for years, it's always busy why on earth do they not take cards..... Epic fail.

I won't be rushing to go back!

The night was Friday. The time was tea. The question was where. The answer was a hands down "Asia Style!"

Having not eaten here for what seems an absolute age, the Mrs and myself appeared to have sudden spontaneous simultaneous cravings for some Asia Style grub. With tummies a rumbling and a desire to head home and find the comforting ass groove on the couch, we decided that take out was the best option, and quickly got to work on ordering half the menu.

With these guys not having card facilities, i popped over to the bank for some dosh and found the grub arriving just as I got back. FAST.

Once again, the food on offer (Starters:honey ribs and malaysian pancake, spring roll. Main: ginger and spring onion beef with noodles), was fresh and packed with flavour. WIN.

This place continues to ping into my head when i think of good asian grub and still manages to be busy every time I walk buy. Must be a good sign!

Glasgow. My first trip, and while city itself lacked character, we managed to find some amazing food. Luckily, I have an old friend who lives there, and he recommended this place the night we arrived. We decided to go check it out.

The neighborhood seems a bit dubious, but there were already lots of people dining here when we arrived on Saturday night (plus there was a Yelp sticker on the door). We got a table and some tea and looked over the menu. The first thing we noticed is that it seemed relatively expensive for Chinese in Scotland. But we were here and hungry, and on holiday, so who cares? We ordered the salt and pepper squid and Malaysian pancakes to start. We also ordered the Malaysian fried rice, the Malaysian chicken satay, and the three kinds roast.

The starters were fantastic! Seriously. If the only thing you get when you come here are the Malaysian pancakes, you'll be one happy camper. They're very similar to Indian paratha, and they're served with an out-of-this-world curry sauce. We were quite happy, and the salt and pepper squid was nicely fried with a great amount of spice. The other half even said we were getting more pancakes for dessert.

The first main that arrived was the chicken satay. It was giant. There were six giant skewers of chicken covered in a sticky, sweet, and peanuty satay sauce. They were a bit hard to eat, but damn they were tasty. There was a generous amount of rice, and the three kinds roast was huge. No wonder the prices were higher than expected: The mains served 3-4 (and we ordered two of them!) The food was amazing!

We did our best to finish, but alas, the food bested us. There were no pancakes for dessert. I can't recommend this place enough if you're looking for some amazing food in Glasgow!

A year or so ago I would have given this place 5 stars, without a shadow of a doubt, however, things have started to slowly change. New staff, smaller portions (I'm talking to you yummy soft shell crab) and slightly less tasty grub. But fear not, this is still one of the TOP Chinese / Malaysian style restaurants in town and a must visit for any fan of this food.

Asia Style is a true Glasgow institution. Open till late at night it has served everyone from the Glasgow drunkards, to the local Chinese community, students and well to do West End types for years. The restaurant in fact has barely changed in all my time of going, with it brown, yes brown, painted walls and plain canteen style wooden furniture. It simple, but honest and clean.

Staff work tirelessly, serving the often packed restaurant, and carrying massive stacks of plates as they clear up the tables (this methodology has to be seen to be believed).

I'm still a regular visitor to this day as its very good value, serves huge portions (i.e. one plate is often enough for two) and the complimentary jasmine tea is brilliant. Long may Asia Style last!

Visited on spec on a Friday evening and were very fortunate to get a seat. Small restaurant adjacent to motorway exit at before St George's Cross. Decor is basic, small tables crammed in to two snug rooms.

Asia style is a Malay restaurant but also does Chinese and appears to be popular with the cities Chinese population. We managed to snag a table for two by the window and were attended to very quickly. Service was polite and efficient and our food arrived after a wait of around quarter of an hour, just enough time to make a dent in a couple Tsingtaos.

I had a starter of Malaysian style pancake followed by a bowl of three roast meat noodles in lovely broth. My companion had the Scezchuan Chicken. The pancake come with a delighful satay style sauce and the noodle broth and roast meats was a huge serving. My companion enjoyed his chicken dish but I fould it a bit sweeter than I'm used to. Prices were reasonable and the whole experience good without being outstanding. I'd definitely visit again but would try the soft shell crab that so many people appear to find delicious.

Quite simply one of the best places to eat in Glasgow, Asia Style offers up a mix of authentic Chinese / Malaysian cuisine, and while at first the lack of takeaway favourites such as sweet and sour chicken or aromatic crispy duck can make picking what you want somewhat daunting, pretty much everything I've had here is superb so it's worth repeated visits just to try it all. Highlights include the Malaysian pancake, the salt and pepper squid, and the sizzling beef.

The ambience and decor are perhaps more akin to a cafeteria than a restaurant, highlighted by the way in which you tick the boxes on the menu to highlight what you want, but in a place where even the plain noodles are in a different league from anywhere else, it doesn't matter in the slightest.

The only negative is that recently they took the brilliantly named "mixed stuff" off the menu. Bring it back.

Now.. I love Chinese/Oriental food ALOT! Having travelled & ex girlfriends from Hong Kong and Vietnam, I know what more traditional and authentic asian food should be.

Asia Style is that very place.. However... If you are coming here for a nightout, dressed up, expecting silver service... you've arrived at the wrong place. This is out and out a 'I'm starving, seat me, water me, feed me - then I'm off' kind of place. I'm not saying thats bad - just be a realist thats the case when you come here. Ultimately, it's about the food here & if you can get past the quirks of the rough diamond, you will have an enjoyable dining experience, just not with attentive adorned service as with other places.

Salt & Chilli squid is my favourite here - be brave, try it & love it! Remember - CASH ONLY!!
