If you're after a specialist art book, magazine or video, then Artwords is the place to go. A tiny bookshop on Rivington street, the shop is jam packed full of the latest titles.
Being so small, they can only hold a fairly small number of books in each category, but they are usually willing to order in books for you if they don't stock what you're looking for.
I usually go in for the comprehensive magazine selection, a great variety of photography magazines, which can be hard to come by in local newsagents. It's always a bit dangerous going in, I always end up buying something and art books don't come cheap. And if you're a student you can get a permanent 5% discount, which is unusual for bookshops.
If you're after an old title you probably won't find it here, unless its extremely popular. Artwords can't compete with mega bookshops like the ones at some of the bigger public galleries, but it's in a great location for all the creatives and art students working nearby. The knowledgeable staff are always friendly and helpful. Just try and avoid going in at busy times, if there are more than a few people in the shop it can feel quite claustrophobic!
This small and unassuming shop is a hidden gem of Shoreditch and one of the best specialist independent bookshops i know. Stocking a whole host of art books, predominantly those published by Bookworks publishing house, and a plethora of art magazines this is a great place to go flick through those glossy pages. Be warned however that the tiny floor space of the shop means that if there's more than three of you in there it'll feel cramped! The staff are friendly, helpful and incredibly knowledgeable so if you're looking for something specific they'll definitely be able to assist.
Yep, it's tiny, but it's packed with the best new titles in art & design and loads of good magazines. I do sometimes feel a bit like I'm under scrutiny when I'm in there, but it's only in my head and because it's probably closer to a wardrobe than a normal shop in size. The staff are actually really nice and helpful so don't be afraid to ask them things - although obviously their stock is limited.
