The Anwara is a thoroughly old fashioned Indian take-away. Basic menu, rather gloomy premises full of unused space, rather solemn gentleman behind the counter. It's the sort of place you might walk past, glance through the window and decide to keep going in the search for something flashier. But if you did that you'd be missing a treat. Yes, the dishes are bog-standard but they're also really good. The decor is dingy but it does include a wonderful huge photo behind the counter of the proprietor being awarded the Kim Noble Memorial Onion Bhaji Award by an equally solemn looking gent, who is in fact local performance artist Kim Noble. And the bhajis are fantastic into the bargain. Mr Anwara (certainly not his name but then I don't know what is) will happily send you home after having paid up then pop round within half an hour with your order, which he carefully explains before handing it over. And usually you get a free veggy curry too. If you want a good old fashioned no frills Indian with a dash of courtesy rather than contemporary cuisine, then stop in your tracks at the corner of Fenham and Furley Roads and you can't possibly go wrong.
