That marvellous grainy scent - were you, for whatever reason, to wake up within these confines, I reckon that instantly would you be able to identify the nature of the business in which you've found yourself. It's a pet shop!
But this isn't just a pet shop. It's one of the finest pet shops around. It's a veritable world of pets. A world of animals. Animal World! No place like it!
Except, of course, for every other pet shop. But this place just feels bigger, more involved, more benevolent. The clutter - whilst it could have been their downfall - only serves to add to the charm.
Unfortunately, save for some fish (always soothing and hypnotic), there're no actual animals in here. Just the periphery. We came in looking for kittens. We were always going to be disappointed there, but there was nary a hamster in sight to cheer us up.
That said, for those who're already lucky enough to have been able to exploit a landlord's allowance of animals, here you'll find everything you need.
As was recently pointed out to me although this pet supplies store is called Animal World, there are no actual animals in here. Well, except fish but nobody really likes fish that much. You can't pet a fish, well not easily and even if you do it's not going to feel very nice. All that aside for a minute, if you have a pet and you're in the area then they will sort you out with what you need. Cage for a rabbit? Done. Hutch for a rabbit? Absolutely. Food for a rabbit? Most definitely. I should add they also sell other pet-related items for other pets that aren't rabbits but frankly why would you want any pet that wasn't a rabbit? Answer me that one?
It's a bit cheek to jowl inside and sometimes you can lose yourself and what you're after in the clutter but the staff, as you tend to find at pet and pet supply shops, are passionate about animals and, as you tend to find with most people who actually work in places, usually know where everything is.
I love animals, so much so that my house is beginning to resemble Knowsley Safari Park. Rodents running here and there, and no, I'm not counting my brother in that.
Anyway, Animal World offers all pet accoutrements, but sadly no mammals. Rabbit hutches at bargain prices, hamster cages with all those fancy add-ons. Cat leads. Tried that once and just ended up carrying my moggie around like a loser.
Friendly staff and great service. I love sharing pet anecdotes and the servers in here are more than willing to lend me an ear (unusual).
In a nutshell, Animal World is handy for locals who need to stock up on pet food and treats.
A family business established in Formby in 1987. We started out as a small corner shop which was part of a 4 bedroomed residential property. Over the years we have gradually expanded into the whole of the property which is now a veritable Aladins cave supplying just about everything for your pets needs whatever it happens to be. We aim to cover all areas of the trade and will always go out of our way to get hold of those unusual specialist items. We have very recently launched a full e-commerce web based arm of the business " www.dinospetproducts.com" named after our boxer dog "Dino" where, if you're not local you can purchase his now well established range of hypoallergenic super premium dog and cat foods. An excellent no compromise range at a great saving when compared to well known brands.
Established in 1987.
Mike took over his first pet store in London in 1977. This was a very small high street outlet turning over just a few hundred pounds per week at the time. Over the 10 years there the store was devoloped into a thriving business with a very healthy several hundred thousand pound per year turnover well liked and supported by the local community. Mike regularly visited his parents who lived in Formby and had seen the properties in Three Tuns Lane and Loveladys Farmhouse on the market and decided that having a young family this would be a great location to raise his children & set up the new businesses. Animal World and Cats Cottage Cattery. The rest is history. Formby is a beautiful place to live, with lovely people who seem to appreciate the friendly efficient atmosphere of the businesses and seem happy to support them. Mike son ( little Michael 6ft 3" ) following university is now involved in the business and so hopefully it will continue to thive and grow over the coming years.
