Amsterdammers is the perfect place to go to if you're after a good value Dutch bike to buy (new or second-hand) or hire to tootle around Brighton and its surrounding areas.
My sister bought her bike here and is very happy with it. So when the impulse came to go to Brighton on a Bank Holiday weekend with my girlfriend, I immediately insisted that we hire a bike for her from Amsterdammers, conveniently located under the station in one of the arches. Look for the classic granny bike bolted to the wall above the door.
Stefan, the laid-back Icelandic owner, was quick to find an appropriate bike and happy to indulge my nerdy interest by talking Dutch bikes whilst setting it up. The price was reasonable, with the only slight issue being that the bike had to be rented for 24 hours as we would be returning it after the shop closed, even though we only needed it for 2 hours. Our fault for getting there late I guess.
The bike itself was typical Dutch: sturdy, practical and comfortable. We went for the 7 speed version, which is recommended given the small hills in and around Brighton. Perfect for cruising the streets, beachfront and along the cliff road out of Brighton.
Returning the bike when the shop was closed was easy too, simply a case of locking the bike to a stand using the locks provided and posting the keys through the letter box.
Overall, certainly recommended if in the market to buy or rent a Dutch bike.

If you want to feel like a true flying Dutchman (or woman), ambling around Brighton on your comfortable push bike and scoffing at the single gear club, then I'd very much encourage you to go on a visit to Amsterdammers in the Open Market.
Gorgeous second hand dutch bikes can be found here, as well as a range of new ones too. My friend bought a lovely 7 speed red one that she cruises around on constantly now. Who needs a car? Prices start from £150 and I'd be sure to invest in a top notch lock.

Another of our visits on our bike hunt last weekend, Amsterdammers is tucked deep in London Road's Open Market, and specialises in Dutch bikes for men and women.
Quality is a focal point, and you'll pay the price accordingly, but they sell second hand bikes too, and also do repairs and services.
The man behind the counter was friendly enough, and very Dutch, which is reassuring when browsing through the stock, you can be comfortable in the knowledge that he knows his stuff.
One of the good things about this bike shop is that it's outside, which means you can test ride the bikes. They also have their own test track facility, enabling you to really get to grips with the bike before you buy.
And, if you do buy one but then realise going Dutch just isn't for you, return it within 14 days unscathed and you'll get a full refund.
