Ambalas is in small heath and I have used these for a wedding party. After ordering more than 50 boxes of mixed Indian sweets they gave us a discount. The sweets are made fresh and the store is not very big but the prices are cheaper than the other sweet centres on soho road but because this one is small heath they are busy because there are not many in the area for this value. They staff are nice and clean wearing gloves and touching food with spoons and forks. The only downside is there is only one table inside to eat off and is mainly for takeaway. But would really recommended as they have really nice food and cheap.
Ambala sweet centre has an air of authenticity and luxury that other Indian sweet shops on the Coventry Road don't have. The man serving explained that they have a place in London which is quite prestigious and the sweets are brought up from there.
The smell when you go in is really inviting and the barfi on display looks like really good quality stuff. I think they're used to people going in knowing exactly what they want so they didn't look too comfortable with a browser like me.
Other than the kulfi lollies in the freezer (wow) the freshly made samosas caught my eye. I bought two vegetable samosas for 90p (and they threw in a chilli dip). They ended up being meat samosas when I eventually tucked into them so luckily I wasn't allergic or a vegetarian. Nevertheless they were really tasty and the pastry was crispy and delicious.
Delicious asian sweets and savouries, however incredibly high in sugar and fat. Nice as a treat on a special occassion. I don't know if this is an indication of how busy or well run the shop is but there is rarely a queue so you won't have to wait long to get served. They also do ready packed gift baskets of sweets and savouries.
