Cute restaurant in the heart of Hamburg ith an excellent view of the Alster! Great place to sit, have a drink and enjoy the view of the lake. They have a pretty good menu of sandwiches, salads and entrees. I got the salami baguette and it came with a dipping sauce, which i thought it was weird but it ended up being delicious! The prices were really good for a really central location!
This place is pretty popular so dont get discouraged by the long line to get a table, the place is massive and has a quick turnaround. The staff was really helpful and they told us they have an english menu available is we needed it. Definitely stop by if you are in hamburg!
We were in Hamburg on good Friday, really struggling to find somewhere to eat that wasn't a massive tourist trap. This place is right on the lake and was heaving, so we assumed this was one. In a sense, it turned out to be, because it was full of tourists, but I wouldn't say it was a trap becuase the food was good and the prices reasonable. It's hard to relax here becuase it is so busy and loud, but the views are really nice and the staff friendly. I had a currywurst with chips, and my girlfriend enjoyed a cheese and salami baguette. Both were under 10 euros - in fact currywurst was 6 euros! They also had reasonably priced beer, so I was happy.
Made a quick stop for coffee and tea to escape the rain. Also enjoyed apple cake and a chocolate cake.
Service was okay; nothing spectacular
the only thing good about this place is the view. whether during the day or at night, you've got a gorgeous view of the alster. but the food is laughable and very disappointing, they should really be embarrassed that they even serve that kind of lame-ass tripe. aaaand it's overpriced, of course. stop by for a drink, enjoy the view, and then go somewhere better for dinner.
Likebutter has told everything about this mess of a restaurant, so there is nothing left to say. But anyway I would like to give you an advise. Pretty near to the Alex, next to the city hall, there is a quiet good restaurant called Cafe Melange. I feel free to post a link
The Service is great, the prices are not the cheapest, but much cheaper than the alex. From the terrace, you have an amiable view on the Alster. Best thing to do, is moving yourself to walk there. It's maybe 5 min away from the alex.
Thanks to it's view on the Inner Alster, the terasse is crowded in summer, food and drinks being average at best. For an after-work-beer (if you find a place) it's okay. The Latte Macchiato was always much milk, little to no milk foam. Inside it's noisy only, the service is trying it's best - we had perfect service at some times, had to wait for a waiter for 30 minutes, another 30 minutes for the drinks Interesting enough, the more busy it gets, the better the service I don't have to understand that.
On the lower level, there is a large room that can be used for events.
I can't recommend this place. The waiters are slow, unfriendly and forget everything.
The food is lame and very boring, the prices are way too high.
The only good thing about this place is the view
Ever heard the word Chicky-mickey and wondered what it meant?
well look no further it means Alex Alster Pavillon!
Besides it being chicky mickey, everything is bad there.
The service is horribly slow.
The waiters are unfriendly, arrogant, mean and rude.
The food is average.
Their Brunch on sundays is ok but overpriced and over crowded, hence cold food, or empty buffet.
Everytime i go there i have to wait at least 15 minutes to even get the waiter's attention. Let's not mention how long it takes him to get us our food and drinks.
The only occasion id advise you to go there is on a summer day, when you find a place there to drink wine. That is of course if you re not in a hurry, because a visit to Alex would take up your entire afternoon.
so basically AVOID
The main reason to come to Alex is location, location, location! It is settled smack dead in the center of town and right on the Alster Lake front with seating galore and views of the best people watching our tourists and locals both enjoy alike.
The walls here are essentially glass, which makes a perfect view for nearly every seat in the house. You have a choice of lake front, terrace outdoor lake front, the Jungfernstieg main street which boasts a diverse crowd of stylish pedestrians prancing through the town center. The food is very American style in the sense that you can order a bit of everything, so extremely general and hearty portions, suitable for sharing with friends. The cocktails here are strong, so sip on a couple and you get an immediate grin and an instant warmth of relaxation to help you take in the breath taking views that is simply the city of Hamburg.
During cooler months, they provide nice heat lamps and blankets to keep you warm and toasty while still enjoying views of the lake. During high season, it is filled with tourists, but in the low season, it is still packed but with more locals.
Great spot for afterwork happy hour or lazy Sundays!
Updated review. Came here with my family for a morning coffee. Got told off for buying an ice cream from the stall next door whilst my wife and I drank our coffees.
I guess this place, along with cafe Mio along Jungfernstieg is so busy with tourists that they can be as slow and rude as they like to customers and still pack em in.
It's a great location but I won't be back in a hurry.
Gross. Really. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!
If I could give zero stars, I would. This one is only justified due to the supreme location - which then again is being taken advantage of by the Alex owners.
The view is nice. Yes. The entire rest isn't. In whichever regard.
Food is icky. Looks old, tastes lame - even classics like Spaghetti Bolognese or a latte.
Service sucks. Badly. Unfriendly, no competence, slow, overwhelmed (and probably underpaid).
Toilets smelly and dirty.
If you have a choice: Go elsewhere. Anywhere else really.
I think a new 'Blockhouse (steak house of Hamburg origin) just openend near the Europa Passage. Eis Warncke's ice-cream (in the funny little silver box on the Alex's right hand side) is better than any culinary item on the Alex's menu
Or, grab food at the food court in the Europa passage, take it 'to go' and find yourself a bench or spot right on the edge along the Binnenalster.
Such a pity.
Great view, skip the food, often crowded. Bruschetta and nachos laughably worse than anything you could find at a grocery store. Marvel at the linguistic dexterity of the waiters who tell waiting patrons to get out of the way in several languages.
Excellent in summer, for you can dine outside while having view to Alster.very romantic in afternoon. For that reason and that its totally central, its usually pretty crowded. But I haven't waited longer than 10 min here. Foodnothing special, but not bad and also not expensive (bout 5-10EUR approx.). So for a short meal after shopping in mockenbergstrasse this place is ok :D
Right. I agree with most of what's been said here, but I've only ever been here at not-so-busy times (mid-late afternoon) for coffee and WAFFLES and I have never been disappointed, either with what has been served to me or the service itself. Obviously the location is great. Maybe I've just been lucky but I would say go at a time when it isn't rammed for a coffee and if you're lucky like I always seem to be and end up round the back or inside the back window then it will be a really nice experience. Give it a chance!
A good place for brunch on Sundays - if you can get a table.
Alex gets some credit for being in THE best spot in town for a terrace. However, I'll give only three stars because it's often hard to get service. Also, I would expect better eating options. It might not be a restaurant, but they can be expected to do better than the current menu.
Nice spot, but slow and arrogant service, overburden as well, low-average food, wishy-washy cocktails.
Big Smokersrestaurant downstairs, terrace.
That one of hamburgs best spots, but for sure it isnt worthy hamburg at all. Rather try for Cocktails the Ciu Bar by the water, or the cup&cino in the collonnaden, or the parlament under the townhall, other bars 10 minute walk Großneumarkt. For coffee try the Deli with view on the Alster just one minute from the Alex, or different coffeeshops in the collonnaden. Enough possibities to have a snack in the nearby city.
This was the first place I went to in Hamburg and was amazed by it's location. Directly on the big Ausenalster lake, with a big terrace viewing the lake, well it is amazing. It's back side looks at the alster house and the street so it is also cool to sit there. In fall they bring also gas lamps and blankets, so don't worry you won't be cold. The inside is also quite vast, but unfortunately as it is on such a central place it is always full with people and there is even a line outside. Two problems however, sometimes it might take a long time for them to take your order and then even longer to deliver it. A couple of times I had to quarrel over the bill as they wanted us to pay for things we didn't consume. Go once and see, but have in mind my tips.
It's true: don't eat here - except maybe a simple salad. But the view on the Alster with the fountain, the boatlights, the swans passing by makes the place 'incontournable' - certainly now that the view from other places on the Jungfernstieg is blocked by scaffolding and fences. This time, I had no complaints about the waiters
