If you ever felt stranded in SouthWest London, in need for a quick Salt Beef / Corned Beef/ Pastrami / Pickled Fleisch fix, I have a tip for you.
On Saturdays, when there is the market on Northcote road, Dove sells "smoked beef" (one of the many variation on salt beef) on rye bread or bagel outside the shop!
5 quids for a bagel, 6 quids for a sandwich.
Both are rather small, but the meat is excellent.
No need to travel to North London, extra transgression points for buying your pastrami on Saturday, and you even get to eat it in the street and rub it in the face of all the people queuing for a way pricier burger at Byron's ...
Life is good again.
The meat is great quality, but you are paying for it. The guy behind the counter was a bit grumpy, which is why I've given it an average score, but he did know about his meats.
I'm not sure when the other reviewers went, but he didn't have any pastrami or sandwiches... which is the main reason I stopped in!
Great butchers, very friendly service and the bacon has a fantastic taste.
Pity it's too far to go more often.
this is a really really excellent local organic butcher. he has been on the road for years and on a Saturday morning don't be surprised if you find quite a que lining up outside the door.
He does cooked meats but it is the raw stuff that is really good!! It is best to go in with an idea of what you want or you might find yourself under a bit of pressure at the counter as they don't have much time for umming and ahhing. Having said that they are more than happy to chop off bone etc. and give advice on cooking.
You really notice the difference to your supermarket fodder.
Word of advice though if it is a sunny day on a weekend and you fancy stopping by for your bbq fare, you won't be the only one, so get there early because when it's gone, it's gone!
I love this little shop on Northcote Road, and it's such a pleasure too see Wandsworth Commonites in their droves snaking out of the shop on a Saturday morning. Dove supplies excellent organic meat, but at a price. Quite recently though I managed to pick up some belly pork for an absolute steal and made the most fabulous Porchetta with it.
A good quality, if somewhat pricey butcher as noted in some other reviews, it does maintain a certain old-fashioned charm, but this does encompass the old English tradition of service with a frown. Smaller than Moen's at the other end of Clapham Common, but none the worse for that there's also a surprising amount of stock not on show, so don't be afraid to ask for what you need. Highly recommended.
The shop is A Dove & Son; H G Dove was one of the ancestors! First class local butcher with only British meat on sale. Aberdeen Angus beef, Plantation (rare-breed) pork, free-range chicken, spring lamb in season, etc, etc. Excellent home made sausages and burgers, with their own pies, stocks, scotch eggs, and ice-cream. Expensive but worth every penny. Helpful, knowledgeable and friendly proprietor and staff. It's fascinating to watch the butchery taking place before your eyes. Listen to the conversations while you wait in the queue and add your two pence worth if you like. It's more than just a butcher's shop!
Northcote Road is being taken over by chain fashion shops, so keep the local food shops in business by using them. There's more to food than saving pennies!
In a country like the United Kingdom (at least at the time of writing) where there is no food scarcity, or scarcity of material goods of any other kind, to see a queue is a very good sign. Dove's is a place of such genius that nine-tenths of the time there is a queue, sometimes snaking around the corner, a queue of salivating, goggle-eyed customers, ordinarily respectable residents of Battersea who by the unashamed abundance of raw meat are reduced momentarily to their basest primitive desires. Dove's takes its meat very seriously - primarily its quality and provenance. They stock superb beef, pork and lamb, all British, often free-range or organic, and offer valuable serving and cooking tips. You can order anything, no matter how unusual, including game and offal. It's one of two high-class excellent butchers on Northcote Road, with several generations of history. The shop itself is beautiful, conserving a number of original features. The staff are gruff and focused on the job possibly a tad more than on the customer - and that's exactly what you want from a butcher. The place is charming, and a very serious proposition for the serious foodie. An absolute gem. Makes me very happy.
